Product Description

 

Screw piles (also referred to as screw anchors, helical piles, or helical anchors) are a steel screw-in piling and ground anchoring system engineered for deep building foundations. Manufactured from tubular hollow sections in varying sizes, these piles provide reliable load-bearing support for structural projects.

The pile shaft transfers a structure's load into the pile. Helical steel plates are welded to the pile shaft in accordance with the intended ground conditions. Helices can be press-formed to a specified pitch or simply consist of flat plates welded at a specified pitch to the pile's shaft.

The number of helices, their diameters and position on the pile shat as well as steel plate thickness are all determined by a combination of :

  • Combined structural design load requirements
  • Geotechnical site parameters
  • Environmental corrosion resistance needs
  • Minimum design life of the supported or restrained structure

How are they installed?

Powerful hydraulic motors are used to apply the large torques that are required to screw a screw pile into the ground. The motors are fastened onto handling machines that range in size from ½ T Bobcats, 20T Excavators, or up to 100T mast mounted crane rigs. The combination of hydraulic motor and handling machine is determined by:

  • Minimum installation torque requirements
  • Torsional capacity of the shaft
  • Site access limitations (height/width)
  • Soil profile and site ground conditions
  • Positional Tolerances
